Jakamurra
Lewis Jakamurra Wanganeen is a member of
the Narungga People whose traditinal homeland is the York
Peninsula of South Australia.
The Wanganeen family is one of the leading tribal groups
of the Narungga People who are acknowledged as significant
artists and story tellers using traditional painting techniques
to illustrate their dreaming, myths and history.
This painting on canvas tells a story about Nintaka (Goanna)
who according to legend grew up in the rich country of the
opal fields of South Australia and soon discovered he could
transform himself from Goanna to human form. He became a
totem to the community. The three tribes of the Pitjatjanjara
bonded through the totem to become one.
